Stained Glass Memorial Window Restoration Project Update

There are 8 pairs of memorial stained glass windows on the north and south sides of the nave of the church, 5 single windows on the east and west side of the nave, and 2 single windows and 1 transome window in the tower (entry way) of the church.  All of the windows except the transome window were installed in the early 1900s when The Rev. Martin Johnson was rector.  The pairs of windows were assessed as being most in need of restoration, plus the 2 single windows on the east side of the nave.   A project is underway to raise funds through grants, fund raisers and donations to restore the windows. All of the restoration work is being done by Scott Taylor Studio of Richmond. VA.  The required carpentry work (frames and sill) is being done by Larry Lanier of Ashland, VA.

The Bowles family pair of windows [north], most in need of repair, was the first to be restored in 2017.  This was made possible through a grant, an anonymous donation, and a fund raising effort.

The Argyle/Baskette family pair of windows [south] was restored as of September 2017.  This was made possible by an anonymous donor.

The Stoneman family pair of windows [south]:  Jacob Stoneman 1834 - 1904 & Elizabeth (Spear) Stoneman 1841 - 1933 has been restored.  This was made possible through a Stoneman family fund raising project and a matching grant challenge.

The Martha & Edward Brown family pair of windows [south] was restored as of July 2019; made possible through grant funds and donations.

The Hodgson family pair of windows [south]was restored October, 2022.  Funds were made possible by a matching grant from the Peter Lee Foundation, family donations, individual donations and fund raising projects.

The Cosby family pair of windows [north] has been restored as of October 2023.  This was made possible through grant funds, fund raising events and donations.

The Cocke family single window [east]:  William Ronald Cocke 1822 - 1938 & Betty Huges Cocke 1873 - 1922 was restored and reinstalled as of April 2024.  Funds made possible through grant funds, and fund raising events and donations.

The Cowherd family single window [east]:  Bernard T. Cowherd 1891 - was restored as of April 2024.  Funds made possible through grant funds, and fund raising events and donations.

The Owens family pair of windows:  T. Norman Owens 1833-1894 & Isabella Owens 1839 - 1906 was removed to the studio on April 6, 2024 where restoration is expected to be completed in 4-6 months.

The Turner family pair of windows [interior north wall of nave] is the last pair to be restored.  This will require a special plan.  The pair was once an exterior window, but in early 1900s became an interior window when the vestibule was added.  No natural sunlight reaches it, plus it is obscured from view by the pipe organ now in front of it.  Discussions are underway as how best to display the window and backlight it.

The remaining single windows have had properly vented protective coverings installed.  The single windows have been assessed and determined not to be in need of restoration at this time.
