Church News & Events

Memorial Stained Glass Window Restoration Project – an exciting update!

The restoration is now complete for the two single windows on the east end of the church for the Cocke and Cowherd families, and will be reinstalled Saturday, April 6.  St. John’s received an unexpected and very generous donation from a family foundation just before Easter so the final exterior pair of memorial windows (Owens family) will be removed on Saturday and taken to the studio for restoration.  The Sr. Warden will meet with Scott Taylor at that time to assess priority of need for remaining windows [one interior pair in need of repair, and 6 small singles not in immediate need of repair].  This project that began in 2016 has moved along more quickly than we could ever have imagined thanks to the interest and generosity of others!  Stay tuned for a more detailed update for this project!  “Beauty is a theological virtue not to be taken for granted” said a visiting priest who was deeply moved by the beauty of the windows upon seeing them for the first time.   St. John’s has been blessed, through the support of others, NOT to take these windows for granted, and to be able to preserve these beautiful treasures for generations to come.

The 58th Kairos Prison Ministry retreat  -  April 17-21  Buckingham Mens Correctional Center in Dillwyn, VA

Our regular supply priest and friend The Rev. Bill Wells is a regular volunteer participant of this prison ministry, and will be there for these upcoming dates in April.  Prison Inmates sign up for a series of talks and conversations commending the Gospel and introducing a faith sustaining program of prayer and mutual support extending into the future.  St. John's parishioners participate by baking and packaging cookies which Bill takes and distributes to inmate participants.  Additionally, parishioners commit to praying for these men through the course of the weekend; inmate participants, prison staff and outside volunteers.
