August 17, 2003 – was DeWitt Long’s first Sunday as our organist, choir director, and valued friend! DeWitt’s presence with us is not only “music to our ears” but a source of well-being for our mental and physical health!
A recent week long program theme at the Chautauqua Institute was entitled: The Transformative Power of Music. Research is being done to show how music, particularly music with words, can help preserve and protect memory and brain function as we age, and is an overall benefit to our health. Evidence indicates that music may have always been a critical part of human evolution. A wooden flute found in an archeological dig dates back 40,000 years! According to one speaker: “The simplest way for anyone to engage in music is to use your own instrument – your voice! Join a choir that does not require an audition! It is not whether you “can” sing, but “will” you sing!” St. John’s offers that opportunity!
